Residential Living
Ädelbrook provides a variety of licensed residential programming, on our Cromwell campus and in the community, for young men and women diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual/developmental disabilities. Programming on all of our houses is gender-specific, and utilizes an applied behavioral analysis model to shape positive behaviors. Our goal is to provide support for individual growth, social skill building and integration within their community.
CLINICAL RESIDENTIAL SERVICES
Adelbrook’s residential program utilizes evidence-based Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy. ABA interventions aim to decrease maladaptive, undesired behaviors and increase adaptive, desired behaviors. Through the use of ABA techniques, our behaviorists are able to determine the function of a maladaptive behavior, and provide a plan to substitute this behavior with a functionally equivalent replacement behavior. ABA uses the principles of reinforcement and motivation to address behavioral challenges that are socially significant for the targeted youth within their culture and community.
Adelbrook’s residential program places an emphasis on community involvement, and on developing the life skills needed for successful integration into the community setting. Under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), the principles of ABA are used throughout the residential program, and each youth receives an individualized behavior intervention plan to address their specific need. This behavior intervention plan is implemented in concert with the youth’s treatment plan to provide a multidisciplinary approach to treatment.
Ädelbrook’s medical department has around the clock nursing for our residential treatment program. This includes Registered Nurse (RN) case managers for all residents and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) for school day programs, as well as an onsite LPN overnight. The medical team at Ädelbrook ensures all the residents medical needs are met, including routine and specialty appointments. Ädelbrook contracts with a local family practice to provide primary care. The Ädelbrook team along with the family practice team work closely together to manage the healthcare needs of each individual.
Nursing creates individualized care plans for our many residents and students with highly specialized needs. The team tracks each individual’s array of medical needs, to ensure a continuum of care across all providers. The medical department works with Parents, Occupational Therapists, staff, clinicians, behaviorists, food service and the school in a team approach to customize the medical needs of each youth. This team approach is helpful in identifying any potential underlying medical component that may be contributing to behavior. Ädelbrook’s medical department leads a team approach in treating and managing each persons medical needs.
Our Occupational Therapists help our residents and students to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations). At Ädelbrook’s residential program, occupational therapy provides individualized evaluations and consultation services to facilitate how to best support the client in achieving their highest level of functional performance within the least restrictive environment.
In Ädelbrook’s Continuous Residential Support (CRS) program, Occupational Therapy is provided on a consultation basis. Each resident is assessed to be sure that they are eating safely and to determine if they have specific, individualized sensory needs. Modifications may be put in place to ensure that their homes are adapted to meet their needs. Each resident is also regularly assessed to determine their level of independence for completing their hygiene and other activities of daily living.
Ädelbrook’s Occupational Therapy practitioners strive to enable our residents and students to live life to its fullest by promoting health, safety and maximizing abilities over disabilities.
It is through play and recreation that children explore, learn and find out who they are. Play provides a sense of connecting with others and opportunities to build rich relationships.
Therapeutic Recreation is committed to continuously enhancing the social, emotional and physical well-being of each resident.
By offering a wide variety of activities for all abilities, individuals are able to explore their interests while building competence and gaining confidence. Whether it’s in the gym, the classroom, on the ropes course or in the community they are learning skills that will benefit them throughout their life.
CAMPUS RESIDENTIAL
Ädelbrook’s residential treatment program is licensed by the Department of Children and Families and serves young men and women up to age 21 and is accredited through the Council on Accreditation (COA). The residential program provides services to young men and women diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder with a range of cognitive, communication, sensory and behavioral challenges. An important goal of residential treatment is acquiring treatment gains in order to accomplish a successful transition to a lower level of care including such settings as homes, foster care or community living. Youth in the residential program have the option of attending our licensed special educational program, the Adelbrook Academy, which is located directly next to the residential program. Ädelbrook’s residential services are funded through the Department of Children and Families (DCF), the Department of Developmental Services (DDS), and School Districts/other.

EXTENSION HOMES
Shiloh and Jordan House Extensions
We have two residential extension homes in the community, Greenbriar and Genesis House. As individuals progress through our treatment programs they are able to transition to a home setting within the community. These extension homes are designed to provide community integration, life skills and other therapeutic supports while maintaining the same level of clinical and behavioral services.

CONTINUOUS RESIDENTIAL EXTENSION HOMES
Continuous Residential Support
Ädelbrook’s CRS/CLA homes provide community-based residences for young adults with developmental disabilities, who require staffing assistances to better support their independence and growth. The CRS/CLA homes, located throughout the state of Connecticut, are chosen based on proximity to their loved ones’ residence to encourage as much time with their family as possible, as well as provide adjacency to their day program services/school and other community-based activities. The houses are shared living arrangements for three or four DDS individuals, designed to maximize each person’s potential with the ultimate goal of greater independence and less staffing supports. A therapeutic staffing team includes program behaviorists who provide individualized behavior support plans, highly trained direct care staff specializing in psychological and physical management techniques, a client entitlement coordinator who assists with managing the individuals state entitlements and finances, and other contracted supports based on the individuals’ acute needs. Our individuals are encouraged to explore their surrounding neighborhood by participating in community events, activities of daily living, and interaction with individuals residing in other CRS/CLA homes.

THERAPEUTIC GROUP HOMES
Potter’s House, Isaiah House, Esther House
Our therapeutic group homes provide trauma-informed services and skill building to young women. Residents receive intensive psychiatric treatment for complex trauma within a developmental framework. Up to five girls ranging in age from 14 to 20 live in each home. The treatment plans are carefully tailored to meet the needs of each individual. The programs provide a transitional home for the girls as they move from acute inpatient or out-of-state care to successful community living.
Our highly trained staff provides ongoing consultation and collaboration with parents/guardians, courts, schools, mentors, vocational and Young Adult Transitional services to construct a wrap-around treatment approach to community-based living. The staff-to-client ratio allows for thoughtful individualized care plans to be implemented — both within the program and through diverse community-based activities — to help them as they transition to independence. Through evidence-based practices we are committed to fostering healthy self-esteem and positive interpersonal skills. Our philosophy of connection, versus correction, builds upon every girl’s unique strengths to help each one reach their potential.

RESPITE PROGRAM
Linda Reilly-Blue Respite Home
The Linda Reilly-Blue Respite Home provides weekend respite to individuals diagnosed with Autism, Intellectual Disabilities and/or other Developmental Disabilities. The staff in the home provide 24-hour total care for individuals eligible for the DDS Behavioral Services Program (BHP), which is available to individuals ages 8-21 with an intellectual disability and challenging behavioral needs which results in the functional impairment of the child. The purpose of this program is to provide short term weekend relief for primary caregivers in a home setting in the community. This program is funded by the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services as a result of the overwhelming need for caregivers (parents/family members and guardians) to receive relief services as they care for their loved ones 24/7. This program is located in a residential neighborhood in Enfield, CT.
